We’d do well to have more places for teens and adults alike to be able to do things they like, socialize, and be productive at the same time. It seems as though Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and I are kindred spirits; he and his brother and tour manager are opening a venue and “cultural space” in their hometown of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

The venue is tentatively called Union College, and the indie crooner plans for more than just a place for bands to strut their stuff. The performance space will be on the first floor, while the two floors above that will host video and audio production classes and workshops, available to anyone who wishes to learn.

In addition to gaining the face benefits of having a place like this in their hometown, another goal is to attract other indie bands to play in Eau Claire. I can hardly blame them for that one; it’s always nice to be in the company of friends and compatriots.

Back in April, it was reported that Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) would be returning to his Eau Claire, Wisconsin alma mater of Memorial High for a show featuring the school’s jazz band, which would split time between backing Vernon on Bon Iver tunes and accompanying while he sang various jazz standards.
What was surely a nice moment for the folks in Eau Claire has now turned into a keepsake for all, with the performance being released as a live recording, titled A Decade With Duke.”
