Update: Chesnutt’s label issues statement on singer’s condition

Vic Chesnutt’s label (Constellation Records) has released a statement on the singer’s condition in the wake of tragic news from Athens today.
“Vic is in the middle of a serious medical situation, he is in a coma, and his family and friends are with him,” said Constellation Records’ Don Wilkie. “We have no comment right now on the specifics other than that his doctors are continuing to assess his condition. We will issue a full statement at an appropriate time. In the interim, we request that everybody respect Vic’s privacy and …

Athens legend Vic Chesnutt in coma

Beloved Athens singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt is in a coma, reports The New York Times and twitter posts by singer Kristin Hersh. While Chesnutt’s family hasn’t released details surrounding the singer’s condition, Hersh’s posts point to a possible suicide attempt and aren’t optimistic about Chesnutt’s chances for survival or recovery.
The 45-year-old Chesnutt is a true gem of Athens, GA music, moving there in the mid ’80s and being discovered by R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe, who produced his first two records. Since then, Chesnutt has released over a dozen more albums, including …

Drive By Truckers sign to ATO, ready new record

ATO records  has picked up another Athens band (they’ve already got the Whigs), announcing the signing of Drive By Truckers for the band’s major label debut, The Big To-Do (set for release on March 16, 2010).
The 13 song album was recorded in Athens by longtime Truckers favorite David Barbe.
“It’s very much a rock album,” says Patterson Hood of the Trucker’s upcoming release. “Very melodic and more rocking than anything we’ve done since disc 2 of Southern Rock Opera.”

Whigs confirm record release date, offer two songs free

The Whigs have confirmed the release date of the new album on ATO Records, In The Dark, for  March 2, 2010. The highly anticipated album, a long time in the making, is the follow up to the breakout Jauary 2008 release, Mission Control.
