Update: Chesnutt’s label issues statement on singer’s condition

Vic Chesnutt’s label (Constellation Records) has released a statement on the singer’s condition in the wake of tragic news from Athens today.
“Vic is in the middle of a serious medical situation, he is in a coma, and his family and friends are with him,” said Constellation Records’ Don Wilkie. “We have no comment right now on the specifics other than that his doctors are continuing to assess his condition. We will issue a full statement at an appropriate time. In the interim, we request that everybody respect Vic’s privacy and that of his family.”
While the cause of Chesnutt’s coma has been rumored as a suicide attempt, there has been no official confirmation to that point.
So you print that he’s dead – REMOVE THE POST – but don’t explain yourself? You’re a fucking wanker.

It is irresponsible and disrespectful to publish unconfirmed information on your Web site, but twice as bad to not explain yourselves. Regarding Vic Chesnutt, you made a mistake so admit it. You weren’t the only ones duped as Billboard reported his death as well, but this is what happens when you take information from an indiviual’s Twitter account and assume that it’s fact. If you have a shread of journalistic integrity, you’d issue a statement and not treat your readers like idiots. Simply removing the post does not cut it.
A magazine representing Athens should have more respect for its community.
